One of the joys of offering farm sitting in Rocky Ridge, MD is getting to spend time on properties full of history, beauty, and character. Recently, I had the chance to care for five lovely mares on a picturesque farm tucked away at the end of a long country lane. The owners even drew me a map to help navigate the fields, a thoughtful detail that added to the charm of the experience.
The herd was split between two pastures: two mares in one field and three in another. As someone who has always been partial to mares, I was delighted to care for this group. My responsibilities for the day included making sure each horse was in the proper pasture, checking and refreshing water, and doing a wellness check to ensure there were no injuries (and to manage them if needed).
Happily, everyone was exactly where they belonged, calm and comfortable. Their water was plentiful, and after a careful once-over, I found no scrapes, bumps, or concerns. Each mare greeted me with quiet curiosity, a reminder of how rewarding it is to build trust with these gentle animals.
The farm itself made the day even more special. It was an older property with wide, rolling acreage that offered both beauty and practicality for the horses. Walking the fields and hearing the soft nickers of the mares while surrounded by peaceful farmland reminded me why I love providing farm sitting in Rocky Ridge, MD.
At the end of the day, the best measure of success is knowing everyone is safe, healthy, and right where they should be—and on this visit, that’s exactly how things were.
